Be an election Jedi
|I saw the first Star Wars movie in the theatre when I was barely six months old and I’ve been a fan ever since. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it turns out that the classic saga has a lot to say about Canadian politics.
A long time ago a wise Muppet warned that “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
Yoda was right. He was also unintentionally commenting on Stephen Harper’s re-election bid, which has become an unsettling reminder of the power of the dark side.
When the Conservatives brought in “Dark Lord” Lynton Crosby to save their flailing campaign, my first thought was: it’s a trap! And as expected, the election has turned ugly in Harper’s desperate attempt to cling to power by demonizing refugees and stoking anti-Muslim sentiments.
To make sure the dark side doesn’t win this campaign, you can help by fighting fear with hope. You can do that by voting for change.
Advance polls open today at noon and are open all weekend, including Thanksgiving Monday, from noon until 8:00 p.m.
If you’re gathering with friends or loved ones this Thanksgiving weekend, take the opportunity to discuss why it’s time for change and go vote with the whole family. You can even make it a community event – knock on your neighbours’ doors on the way to the polling station and encourage them to vote for change with you.
Remember, because of anti-democratic changes brought in by the Unfair Elections Act, it’s best to double-check that you’re registered and have the ID you need to vote. If you’ve received a Voter Information Card in the mail, you can use it to find your local polling station but not as ID to vote.
If you haven’t taken the voter pledge for change yet – now’s your chance. Thousands of people from coast to coast have taken the voter pledge. With many ridings expected to be incredibly close, pledging to be a voter and to bring others with you can change the outcome of the election.
This election, vote or vote not. There is no try.
May the force for change be with you.
