Folly of failing to recognize Earth as a living being entitled to protection by endowments of rights. A expression of collective dysrationalic cognitive dysfunction of human race has been failure to timely and effectively recognize Earth as a living being. This has been attempted to be remedied in a very incipient way by the recognition of what has been referred to as the Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles considered useful by its supporters for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global community in the 21st century.
This view of nature as a living entity is entirely consistent with the Gaia theory of James Lovelock an aging independent scientist, environmentalist and futurist who lives in Dorset, England who has made attention catching predictions including that “Humans are too stupid to prevent climate change from affecting how we live on the Earth” and as a result the human race collectively would do a shoddy job in this combat against global warming. The theory proposes that organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a self-regulating, complex system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the planet. Topics of interest include how the biosphere and the evolution of life forms affect the stability of global temperature, ocean salinity, oxygen in the atmosphere and other environmental variables that affect the habitability or sustainability of Earth.
Earth Charter came into existence after being created by a global consultation process, and has been endorsed by organizations representing millions of people, and it “seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations.” It calls upon humanity to help create a global partnership at a critical juncture in history to proceed with a sustainable growth which is not an easy goal to accomplish. Earth Charter’s ethic envisions that environmental protection, human rights protection, equitable human development, and the highly desirable goal of g global peace and harmony are highly interdependent and indivisible objectives that need to be diligently pursued. It urges a novel and innovative framework for thinking about and addressing these issues that would come to haunt us.
An organization named Earth Charter Initiative exists to promote this Charter but has had limited practical success as Charter remains largely unknown. Earth Charter was proposed for approval by United Nations by Bolivian President Evo Morales who announced the objectives of the “Peoples World Conference on Climate Change and Mother Earth’s Rights,” held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, April 19-22 2010. Let us await development but we need not rely on the Earth Charter at this point.(see: DRAFT OF UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MOTHER EARTH)
